Interests and roles of Sulfur in plants
Sulfur is an essential macronutrient for plants:
- Formation of nodules in leguminous plants.
- Protein Synthesis: Component of sulfur amino acids (methionine, cysteine, cystine).
- Component of chlorophylls, essential for photosynthesis.
- Part of enzymes and vitamins (biotin, thiamin, glutathione).
- Activation of enzymes involved in energy and fatty acids metabolism.
A better nitrogen use and an increased yield
Effect on thousand kernel weight and the number of grains per ear
Effect on lenght and diameter of ears (Szulc and al, 2008)
Action on soil
- Slow acidification of the soil
- Component of humic acids and clay-humic complex
- Increase in S, N and K total rates (Skwierawskaandal,2008)
Progressive release of sulfate, available form for plants
- Sulfur oxidation of the elemental sulfur in sulfates, by soil microorganisms
- Oxydation du S élémentaire en sulfates par les microorganismes du sol.
